The Natural Gardener was founded and built on a desire for zero waste.

After finding hundreds of plastic pots left over from a nursery in 2004, their passion for gardening and drive for sustainability sent them on a hunt for sustainable, plastic-free products. (1/2 a billion plastic pots go UK landfills every year!)

It was on the shores of Sri Lankan that husband and wife team, Louise and Joe, found a band of widows from the Tsunami who were handcrafting plant pots from coconut coir.

We were the first to bring Coir Pots to the UK and are still the largest importers of coir plant pots, troughs, matting and more. If you’ve ever seen Monty waving a Coir Pot around on Gardener’s World, it’s one of ours.

Up to half a billion plastic plant pots are ending up in landfill. It is believed that creating plastic from fossil fuels and natural resources uses over 80% more energy which in turn releases more carbon into the atmosphere than making them from recycled plastics. Plastic also takes at least 50 years to biodegrade, with some plastics taking 1000 years to break down into harmful micro-plastics.
