June in a nature-friendly garden: Low-impact gardening jobs for a blooming summer

Summer’s here and if you’re anything like us, you’re itching to get mucky and do some gardening jobs during the weekend. Summer is the best time of the year for us: longer days, bees buzzing and everything bursting with energy. But how do we channel that surge of gardening energy into something that’s not just good for the soul but also gentle on the planet?

Let’s talk about one of the most illuminating gardening jobs to do this summer. One that’s practical, plant-friendly and gives back more than it takes away.

The Important Garden Job: Mulching for Moisture and Life

We know, we know… mulching isn’t the most glamourous gardening job in the world. Stick with us, because in an eco-garden, it’s one of the best you can do now.

With the warmer weather, moisture retention is key. Instead of reaching for the hosepipe, mulching is your secret weapon. Lay down a thick layer (I’m talking 5 to 8cm) of organic mulch – think homemade compost, beautifully rotted, straw, grass clippings – all full of natural goodness.

Why does this matter?

  • Water Conservation – it keeps the soil much cooler and locks the moisture in, reducing your watering needs.
  • Weed Suppression – Less time spent crouched over weeding, more time enjoying the garden without an aching back.
  • Soil Health – As it breaks down, it adds much needed nutrients. Think of it as slow-release eco-fertiliser.

Top Tip: Use What You’ve Got

Sustainability’s not about buying more. It’s about doing more with what you have. If you allow your lawn to grow longer than usual, which is great for wildlife, and then cut it short leaving the cuttings to dry out in the sun – you will have plenty to make the mulching happen. You want the cuttings to be dry not matted or slimy.

Have You Tried Our Biodegradable Mulch Mats?

If you’re after a low effort option, then our biodegradable mulch mats are a great answer – think no plastic, no nonsense and cost effective. Just pop them around your plants and they’ll slowly break down into the soil – zero waste, zero guilt.

Let Nature Do All the Heavy Lifting

That’s what it’s all about – gardening jobs that are in tune with nature, not working against it. Let the microbes do their thing, let the worms wriggle and trust that clever mulching is labour saving – be kind to your back!

So, this June, skip the chemicals, save water and mulch like a natural gardener. Your plants and the planet will thank you for it!
