Coir is the base, it’s the ‘powder’ between the tufts of the outer husk of the coconut. There’s not much in that to be honest – it’s a great humus, really water retentive but also an ideal ‘ binder’ for the more active ingredients.
This husk of a coconut is ‘waste’, just like orange peel, but Nature hates waste and so do we! Our coir would normally be a by-product but it’s calculated that the 1 litre size coir pot captures over 0.18 litres of carbon and that’s before we use it again.
The next ingredient Biohumus – known to the more technically minded as ‘Worm Poo’ – is a much more active constituent. Our worms take all that certified organic compost and, errr, concentrate it. Without worms, and without all those bees and other pollinators, our world would, quite simply, be near barren.
So rich in NPK, micro-nutrients and growth elements, Biohumus is an essential natural tool for you gardeners.
Then there’s Seaweed from the cold, fresh Atlantic – another key ingredient towards the ‘Plus’ part of our compost. This totally-pure seaweed, nothing added, is full of micro nutrients and organically harvested on the Irish coast.
Compost Plus also includes Neem, which has been used in India for millennia. It has literally thousands of uses but we’re interested in all its hundreds of nutrients and bio-active ingredients including Azadirachtin, Nimbin and Salinin. These are really helpful pest repellents and keep many soil-born nuisances away.
A fertiliser which keeps the pests away, what more could you ask for?
Well, Mycorrhiza Fungi offers that little bit more. This is Nature’s secretive wonderdrug, you need a microscope to see them but simply put, it is a wholly-beneficial fungus that not only supplies your plants, shrubs and trees with nutrients from the soil but also efficiently transfers water.
So there you have it, The Natural Gardener’s Compost Plus.
We know it’s not the cheapest compost on the market but it is so much, much more than your simple ‘Peat Free’ compost.
And remember, it’s a gift that keeps on giving!
