I'm sure they won't mind ........... will they ?
And it's nice to remember what it's all about !
More and more carbon going up in the air, turning the Earth into a great big glass house.
We're drowning islands, yet causing drought; shifting warm water currents, bringing colder temperatures; sunbathing in March, floods in July.
Everything's changing.
(No, I'm not going to bang on about not wasting things, sustainability again and again.
Although if we had followed 'Nature's Natural Cycle'........ O.K. I'll shut up !)
Mainly we can reduce our emissions by just doing a little less of what we have been doing so much more of !
We all know what we should be doing, use less fuel, insulate more, do you really need something new, something unsustainable ... we all could go on and on.
But how about if I told you of something that is :-
Organic,
Captures 80% of its Weight in Carbon
Increases your crop yields, and gives you healthier plants
Helps your soil retain water, and essential nutrients
Increases the effect of your green compost and organic fertilizer
Reduces down the harmful effects of chemical pesticides
Suppresses methane and nitrous oxide (two really bad 'greenhouse gases' )
Comes from the waste of farms, foresters, sawmills, paper mills, and even councils
BUT
It's BIOCHAR !
Add about 10% to you compost and you will have hugely improved crops, flowers and shrubs, add a little Mycorrhiza when you plant and you will be astounded ( I was !)
Wonderful this modern technology - except it isn't - MODERN that is.
Mycorrhiza has been around for as long as the soil itself has, and we have been using slow burning techniques ( it's called 'pyrolysis') ever since we discovered charcoal.
( Earlier even, though they didn't know it.
Well the technique may not be new, but the huge problem it will help to solve certainly is !
Ancient Amazonian tribes used to mix biochar in their soil. This came from their 'slash and burn' technique of clearing the forests. Now, thousands of years later, the soil they left behind - theTerra Preta - is still amazingly fertile.
Areas of fertility in the really pretty fragile, thin fertility of the rain forest soil.
Although now we slash and burn huge swathes - so we can enjoy our nice cheap Macdonalds !)
It's 'carbon capture technology' in your garden.
Every 1.5 kg bag of Biochar that you use will not only really, really increase the fertility your soil, but will capture 1.2 kg of Carbon for probably thousands of years.
(I hate the phrase 'no brainer' - but can you think of a better one ?)
Incidentally did you know that the largest reason for CO2 going up in the air from agriculture is the chemical fertilizer they use ( causes 38% of agriculture's emissions.)
Just think what would happen if we could get them to use Biochar instead !
Then when I plant out I always add a dash of Mycorrhizal Fungi too, just enough to cover the spread of the roots.
( Tesco's I'm a'coming ! )
1.5 Kg Bag with 360 Gr Mycorrhiza £15.40
10 Kg Bag with 360 Gr Mycorrhiza £38.90
